Veterinary Services
PRIMARY CARE
This includes everything from the initial consultation with our patients to treatment for any illness, condition, or behavioural issue. During these visits, we assess and provide guidance on nutritional plans and appropriate management based on the individual case. Vaccination and deworming programs are also included here. Dentistry work, reproductive cases, ophthalmologic evaluations, and minor surgeries are still considered part of our primary care services. More complex cases are referred to and managed by the appropriate specialists.
LAMENESS / POOR PERFORMANCE DIAGNOSIS
Thanks to our specialized training, years of accumulated experience, and work across various equestrian disciplines, this area is one of Vetequin’s strengths. We also travel outside our standard coverage area to support fellow veterinarians who request this service or for second-opinion consultations.
Our approach to lameness and horses presenting with poor performance involves a thorough physical and dynamic clinical examination. Based on the findings, we collaborate with the owner to determine the most suitable course of action tailored to the specific circumstances.
IMAGING DIAGNOSTICS
Vetequin is equipped with advanced digital radiography systems and portable ultrasound machines with four probes, allowing access to all possible areas of the horse’s body.
Imaging diagnostics are performed on-site, wherever the horse is located. In more complex cases, or when minimum working conditions are not met, the owner is asked to transport the horse to our clinic at the Hipodromo Costa del Sol.
REGENERATIVE THERAPIES
Vetequin has been treating its patients with biologic products derived from the patient’s own blood for over 15 years. In our laboratory, we have the technology to process and produce PRP and IRAP, therapies that can be prepared on-site without the need for the patient to travel. We use these treatments for soft tissue injuries—always guided by ultrasound to precisely target the affected area—as well as for joints and tendon sheaths. We also work with stem cells for orthopedic issues, sourced from specialized laboratories that produce them using donor horses.
PRE-PURCHASE EXAMINATIONS
We carry out a large number of pre-purchase exams in our local area. Upon acceptance of a quote, we can travel to other parts of Andalusia and, in exceptional cases, beyond. Many of these examinations are performed for international clients who trust our experience and objectivity.
We offer two types of clinical exams: a basic 2-stage vetting, most commonly used for leisure horses, and a more thorough and comprehensive 5-stage vetting for competition horses. For the latter, we always recommend a radiographic study, which can be tailored to the individual horse. Ultrasound and endoscopic evaluations are optional, depending on the specific case.
We also offer a specialized ultrasound assessment for certain sport horses, aimed at evaluating soft tissues of high relevance in performance horses—tissues that cannot be accurately assessed through clinical examination or radiographs alone.
SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
Shockwave therapy has become an essential tool both within our practice and as a service we offer to fellow veterinarians. Our treatments have been significantly enhanced and shortened in duration thanks to the incorporation of shockwave technology. It provides a safe alternative for
horses and owners who prefer a more conservative treatment approach.
Shockwave therapy is used not only as a complement to orthopedic treatments but also as a valuable tool for injury prevention, and post-surgical rehabilitation.
RESPIRATORY ENDOSCOPY
Our equipment allows us to perform endoscopies in the field, enabling visual examination of the upper airways and pharynx. It is routinely used in pre-purchase exams and for horses that “make noise,” show poor performance, present nasal discharge or blood from the nostrils.
COMPETITION SERVICES
Vetequin has fully formed the team of FEI Delegated Veterinarians and FEI Treating Vets for numerous national and international equestrian competitions. Currently, all members of the Vetequin team are FEI Permitted Treating Veterinarians, meaning they are properly qualified and
have the necessary access to examine horses at international competitions.
RESCUES
Vetequin has been working with the Donkey Sanctuary for over 20 years, assisting in many of their rescues. We have also provided support and patrolled to monitor acts of mistreatment towards equines at equestrian events. On many occasions, we have worked with Seprona (Nature Protection Service) to assist horses in situations of abandonment and abuse.
MANAGEMENT / CONSULTING
We manage the referral process for our patients, both in emergency cases on-site and for horses requiring surgical evaluation and diagnoses with hospital-based techniques and equipment.
We also offer a consulting service for clients purchasing horses abroad. We evaluate the exams conducted by our veterinary colleagues. Sometimes the consultation is thorough, while other times it is focused solely on radiological studies. Each situation is unique, and the service is
tailored to the specific circumstances.
Vetequin also provides an exclusive consulting service for bloodlines selection, specializing in PRE (Spanish Purebred) horses for breeding and selection of specimens.
TRAINING
Vetequin actively participates in courses as trainers. We are certified by the global ISELP association to deliver practical wetlab sessions. Vetequin has developed training programs for grooms, farriers, and other veterinarians in various fields.
Additionally, Vetequin, both individually and in collaboration with certain universities, hosts veterinary students for defined periods.
Vetequin also offers students from international educational systems the opportunity to complete their “working experience” with us, providing them with insight into the day-to-day realities of our profession.
